The Difference Between Ranks and Positions in the PGBI GUARDIANS Organization

Understanding the structure of the PGBI Organization requires clarity on two key concepts: ranks and positions. While they are related and often used interchangeably in casual conversation, they serve different purposes and have distinct implications regarding authority and hierarchy.

  1. Ranks

Definition: Ranks are the levels of achievement, status, or seniority within the organization. They are usually designated through recognition, accomplishments, or time spent as a member.

Purpose: Ranks serve to acknowledge a member’s experience, dedication, and contributions. They often come with specific privileges, responsibilities, and respect from other members.

Authority: Higher ranks generally imply greater respect and sometimes greater influence within the organization, but they do not automatically confer authority over others unless explicitly stated.

B. Positions

Definition: Positions refer to specific roles or responsibilities assigned to members within the organization’s leadership or operational structure.

Purpose: Positions are functional and define what a member is authorized to do, such as leading, managing, or executing particular tasks or projects.

Which Comes First?

In the organizational hierarchy, positions typically come first. A member is assigned to a specific position based on their skills, needs of the organization, or leadership decision. Once in a position, a member can then earn or be promoted to different ranks based on their experience, contributions, and achievements.

Which is Which?

Positions are about roles and responsibilities—what a member is authorized to do within the organization.

Ranks are about status and seniority—how long or how well a member has contributed, which may influence their influence or respect within the organization.

Examples:

  1. National Level:
  2. National President
  3. National Chairman
  4. National Executive Vice President
  5. National Executive Members
  6. Secretary-General
  7. Deputy Secretary-General
  8. Assistant Secretaries
  9. National Treasurer
  10. Assistant National Treasurer
  11. National Auditor
  12. National Liaison Officers
  • Regional, Provincial, Municipal, and Barangay Levels:
  • Chairman
  • Vice Chairman
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Auditor
  • Business Manager
  • Public Relations Officer (PRO)
  • Other Branches (e.g., National Founders Council):
  • Director General
  • Director General for Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao, and Overseas
  • (All of these are full-fledged Founders & hold high-ranking positions within the council.)

Authority: Positions carry formal authority and decision-making power, especially when assigned by a higher governing body or according to the organization’s rules.

Now that positions and ranks are laid out, what about the titles?

  • Titles are honorific or formal designations given to members, often to recognize their status, achievements, or particular roles.
  • For example, the title Grand Supremo was given to him during his incumbency as the National President and Chairman.
  • Such titles are usually honorary, symbolic, and can reflect prestige, respect, or a specific role within the organization’s tradition or history.
  • However, the title of Grand Supremo (GS) is a special designation. It is given to the highest incumbent national official of the Organization, whether coming from the Supreme Godfather (SGF)/Supreme Godmother (SGM) group or the Ranking Magic Group, or any member who carries one of the Special Markings specified in this Article, Section 10 (b).

Which is Higher or More Authoritative?

  • Authority is primarily based on the position a member holds within the organization. Those occupying official positions (like President or Chairman) have the authority to give directives, make decisions, and oversee operations.
  • Ranks, on the other hand, reflect a member’s experience and standing but do not necessarily grant authority over others unless their rank is associated with a specific position of authority.
  • Titles, like Grand Supremo, are more ceremonial and honorary, often bestowed to honor service or achievement, and do not automatically confer authority unless tied to a specific position.
  • The Grand Supremo title, in particular, is an esteemed honorific awarded to the highest-ranking national official, symbolizing their leadership status within the organization.

Titles in Other Groups or Factions

In other groups or factions, titles such as Master Founder (MF), Universal Grand Master Founder (UGMF), and similar designations are often considered titles rather than ranks. However, depending on the organization, these titles can also function as ranks if they denote a certain level of achievement, seniority, or authority within the hierarchy. It varies by group, but generally, titles like these are more akin to ranks reflecting status and accomplishment.

Overall, for PGBI

The title of Grand Supremo will always prevail over the rest of any titles from other factions or groups, since it has been explicitly specified in our Constitution and By-Laws. This designation signifies the highest authority and status within the PGBI organization, reinforcing its supremacy over other titles or ranks from different factions.

In summary, while ranks recognize a member’s status and experience, positions determine actual authority and responsibility within the organization’s hierarchy. Titles serve as honorifics that acknowledge significant roles or achievements. The combination of ranks, positions, and titles helps maintain a structured, respectful, and hierarchical organization where experience, formal roles, and honors work together to uphold leadership and tradition. – GSM
